Lightroom Red Green Blue Dots on Dark Image

Red, green and blue dots on my pictures
Nov 3, 2015
Hi! I noticed that when I take a picture of something that is black, I see red, green and blue dots when I zoom in on the picture in lightroom or photoshop. I read something about when the ISO is high, it makes red green and blue dots, and you have to do a mirror lock-up with only the body cap on. They are on all my pictures, but I can see them easier when I take a picture of something black. Could they be dead pixels? Thanks!

You mean like in the picture below? Look to the left of the red trousers.
That's noise.
Post one of your affected photos directly from your computer so that I can see the EXIF data, but you are probably using too high an ISO.
If, on the other hand, you only have a small number, always in the same places then it could be bad pixels, but I doubt it.

I don't think it's noise, because there is about 2 red dots, 3 green dots and 5 blue dots. Even at ISO 100, they are still there. I will try to post a picture that has the dots in it. Thanks for your reply

They could be stuck pixels, but due to the nature of how the camera comes up with full color — the domasicing processes — the colors are usually different, and they occur in patterns of multiple pixels next to each other.
By all means, upload a picture for us to look at!

Re: Red, green and blue dots on my pictures
On the sensor, bad pixels may show up as dead (black) or else hot (full color, maximum on). If they always show up in exactly the same places, and with the exact same dead or hot appearance, then you have bad pixels. With some cameras, you can "map out" those bad spots. With other cameras, you are stuck with it.

Here is a picture I took of an amplifier, I circled the dots but you might have to zoom in somehow:
You cant see red dots, only blue and green, but I circled them in red

You have to zoom in to see them, if you click on the image you can download the original JPEG file

Re: Red, green and blue dots on my pictures
Actually, I found out that the dots at ISO 100 was just some dust, but I cleaned it off. At ISO 1600, my Nikon D5000 is very good with noise performance, and maybe that is the cause for the dots. I will try to take anothe picture of the same amplifier at ISO 100.

Re: Red, green and blue dots on my pictures
Also, you want to make sure that those color dots are not artifacts from over-sharpening.

Set your camera to take a similar shot to the one you posted. Move the camera a fraction and shoot again. Open the shots in a viewer where you can flick between them. If the dots stay in the same place in the frame it's probably a pixel problem; if they move it isn't.

Ok, I guess those dots were just caused by the ISO being too high, because I took another picture of the same amplifier, and no dots at ISO 200.

I just tried it at ISO 200, and there was no dots. I think they were there just because of the ISO being too high.

Re: Red, green and blue dots on my pictures
Some camera sensors will produce that problem only some of the time. Some do it when the sensor pixels get too warm from heavy use. Some do it only at high ISO. Some do it when you can least afford it to happen.
